With the number of people using the JobAdder mobile app at an all-time high, we’ve been exploring new ways to raise the stakes on mobile recruitment and make the app even better for each and every user.
Unsurprisingly, the mobile app feature that’s continually ranking most popular with users is the search function – just last month it was used over 9,800 times!
If you think that sounds like a lot, the desktop version feature that took out the top gong for most popular feature last month was the Job Application Quick View with a whopping 1.9 million clicks!
There’s no denying it – search is at the center of every recruiter’s daily workflow. As a result, extensions and improvements to the search functionality are the star feature of our latest mobile product update.
Introducing the new recent keywords search.
This means that if you’re recruiting for similar types of roles, you can skip the hassle of retyping your search each time by simply tapping on it when it appears automatically below your search bar.
You’ll be happy to know that this neat new feature is available on all screens with a bar search.

At JobAdder, we believe you’ve got to shake things up and do things differently in order to get the best results.
So, why not challenge the norm when it comes to hosting job interviews?
Picture this: you’re a candidate who’s been invited to two job interviews, one in a stiff office boardroom and one at a cozy local pub. Which job (and company for that matter) would you be more intrigued about?
Recently we put this scenario to the test.
Two of our Product Managers along with the head of our Mobile Product Development team invited a candidate to give a final pitch presentation at a local pub.
The candidate was met at the pub by our friendly team of Adders, where beer and banter provided the backdrop to their presentation.
The net effect of this unconventional recruitment strategy was that the informal setting took the edge off of the interview nerves, allowing the hiring managers to get a more accurate impression of the candidate and how they handled themself in an unorthodox environment. In turn, the candidate got the chance to experience our company values in a friendly setting and see the way our teams work together.
As long as you’re not having to rely on wifi or power, which can be tricky at a pub – and you don’t coincide your interview with happy hour when there’s noise to contend with – hosting an interview at a pub is a convenient, relaxed and informal setting. Another benefit is that it gives the candidate the chance to mingle in a social setting with the team afterwards and see if they can picture themselves fitting in with the people and culture of the company.
Not quite the scene you picture when you think of a job interview, right?
As companies the world over start embracing new and more liberating workforce trends, we see workplace traditions being redefined every day. For example, global mobility and increased workplace flexibility allow people to work outside the confines of one desk for the same set number of hours every day.
Hosting a job interview at a pub may not be feasible for every workplace, but it’s food for thought about how you and your company can redefine traditional workplace habits. What out-of-the-box approaches does your company have towards daily work traditions and habits?

Last week a group of us Adders was delighted to attend the August Captain’s Table event hosted by the team at Navigator Consulting.
If you’re wondering about what the attendance list looks like at a ‘Captain’s Table’ event, no – you don’t have to be an actual captain to attend, but you do have to be a recruitment business owner or leader with an avid interest in our industry. The purpose of the Captain’s Table meet ups is for industry influencers to network and discuss current recruitment trends and issues.
Supported by JobAdder, Gumtree and JXT, a group of us (non-captains) gathered at Sydney’s Hyatt Regency Hotel to discuss the topic of this session: employee retention and performance. Don’t miss this quick video of the event highlights:
Here are the top 10 insights and advice discussed at the event:

Anyone who has interacted with our amazing Customer Support team in the last 6 years will have had the pleasure of speaking with Bree Cowell.
Bree was one of our first Support Consultants and has forever raised the bar for the way in which we support our customers. Bree also became our first remote employee when she moved to Bali and continued to support customers from there. Many customers still don’t even realise she has been sitting in a hut surrounded by monkeys the whole time. Bree’s commitment and dedication to making remote working a success has led to a company wide remote working policy and has allowed dozens of Adders to work from some of the most amazing places in the world.
Bree is an avid yogi and advocate for women in need and has decided to devote her life to helping others. Her first step on this journey is heading to India to work with impoverished women and children.
Bree finishes up at JobAdder today so if you have worked with Bree please wish her well, either via comment on this blog or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Bree is also fundraising to make this trip possible and is just a fraction short of hitting the amount she needs. If you can help Bree out with a donation it would mean the world to her: https://chuffed.org/fundraiser/rise-as-one-to-reduce-child-marriage-and-poverty1563
We love you Bree and wish you every success with your journey.

According to new statistics released by Trade Me Jobs, New Zealand is currently experiencing high demand for jobs.
As reported by The Global Recruiter, listing data revealed that Trade Me Jobs has experienced a 12% increase in job vacancies listed on their platform. This upturn represents the fourth consecutive quarter of significant growth in new job listings.
Jeremy Wade, the Head of Trade Me Jobs, shared, “The job market has experienced unbelievable growth over the last year, and we’ve seen listings up in every region across the country which is very rare.”
As well as strong demand for talent, an analysis of over 72,000 job vacancies on the Trade Me platform has shown that some sectors of the New Zealand employment market are also experiencing growth in wages.
Mr Wade expanded, “Overall average pay was down 1 per cent, but in sectors with huge demand for staff the wages have begun to shift pretty markedly. For instance, the average wage in construction in Auckland has jumped 21 per cent in the last year.”
Sectors that are experiencing the highest levels of growth – and wage increases – are jobs in the construction (average pay up 8%) and automotive (average pay up by 5%) industries.
The Trade Me job board is integrated with JobAdder. For more information on Trade Me Jobs or to sign up with the job board from your JobAdder account, visit our Trade Me Jobs integration page.

For most people with ordinary jobs, work is usually the thing dragging them home from a tropical island and back to the desk. But JobAdder is no ordinary workplace. For our Customer Support team, last week it was work dragging them to the tropical island of Bali for an unforgettable week of team bonding and remote working.
At the beginning of the year, JobAdder reintroduced an internal employee program called LifeAdder. LifeAdder is an opportunity for us Adders to set personal goals for the year ahead based on a challenge we want to overcome or a new experience we want to try that puts us out of our comfort zone.
In true Customer Support style, the Support Pirates raised the bar and aimed high – literally – their LifeAdder challenge was to climb the famously steep Mount Batur in Bali together as a team. So last week they jetted off to spend a week in Bali achieving their lofty goal and working remotely for a week from Bali’s busy tech hub in Ubud.
On the day of the climb, the Support Pirates woke up at 2am and trekked for almost 3 hours in the pitch darkness with just a few torches to help them navigate and scale the volcanic rocks. After a few straight hours of trekking and “focusing on breathing so as to not die,” they reached the summit just before dawn and saw the sunrise.
Of the experience, Customer Support Manager Jez shared,
“Mt Batur was a massive highlight, but the biggest highlight for me wasn’t the hike itself but the experience. It was spending more time with everyone out of the office and even out of the normal Sydney work environment. It was also sitting back and not being “the Manager,” learning and getting to know more about everyone and what amazing people they are. This was definitely a humbling experience for me. Reflecting on it, it’s really reminded me to let go of the manager mind frame and know you can place trust in the team around you. They have a different outlook and approach which will help the team grow and evolve and look at things differently.”
The rest of the week was spent working remotely and bonding as a team. Highlights included riding mopeds through the town and never-ending rice fields, trying all the different flavours of local Ubud cuisine and exploring hidden waterfalls.
Customer Support Consultant Holly shared some insight on the importance of team bonding brought about on the trip:
“We definitely did a lot of team bonding just by being around each other 24/7 on this trip. It is a very different experience to be around someone for 8 hours a day, versus the entire day. Working together and then going out to dinner afterwards etc. I think we all really learned so much about each other, and I feel that the time together made us stronger as a team. When you are with someone all day, there is so much time for some ‘real talk’ and this helped me to really get to know the amazing people that I work with.”
Here’s a roundup of the Support team’s top tips for working remotely from Bali:
With the Customer Support team well and truly raising the bar on the LifeAdder challenge for 2017, the question on everyone’s mind is: what exciting adventure do they have in store for next year?

We’re officially past the halfway mark of 2017, which means now is the perfect time to take stock, review and reassess what your plan of action for the rest of year looks like.
There’s probably a countless number things you could be doing differently to better your day-to-day recruiting habits, but realistically, who has the time to completely overhaul their recruitment strategy?
So, here is a mid-year recap of the most frequently-used features, tools and actions in JobAdder over the past 6 months, based on raw data and click rates. We’ve narrowed down the staples of every user’s recruiting processes so that rather than reinvent the wheel – you can make smart improvements to the way you currently recruit.
Your Favourite Features
#1: Job Application Quick View (9.1 million clicks)
Have you started using the Quick View keyboard shortcuts yet? Use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to flick through and select Quick View cards in a flash. More about this tip.
Plus, if you just need a snapshot of a candidate record, click on their photo in your search results (as opposed to the candidate name or title) and you’ll see a Quick View popup window.
#2: Quick Search (7.1 million clicks)
Make sure you know how to find whatever record you’re looking for the fastest way possible by using the expanded Quick Search filter options.
As well as traditional search terms, like a candidate’s name, did you know you can search via a mobile number, position and email address? These Quick Search options are also available from the mobile app! More about this tip.
#3: Resume Downloaded feature (2.6 million clicks)
Unsurprisingly, recruiters and hiring managers spend a lot of time downloading resumes.
Have you noticed the new ‘Resume Updated’ column in the Candidates Grid? Always keep an eye on it to ensure you download the most up to date version of a candidate’s resume. In larger terms, this feature also gives you an indication of which candidates are active in the job market. More about this tip.
Your Most Frequent Actions (So Far This Year)
#1: Emails (1.3 million sent)
Do you have more than one office or brand? If so, you need to take advantage of our dynamic email signatures. By setting up just one master email signature – the key information is taken from your user profile – this signature is applied to all of your JobAdder email templates.
Equally, for small businesses, having one clean signature that is consistent across the board adds a professional edge to you and your consultants’ outbound emails.
It’s also completely customisable, meaning staff in different office locations will automatically have a tailored version of the signature, such as local address details and regional social media profiles. More info on this tip.
#2: Notes (1 million created)
Are you using @mentions when your notes involve other colleagues? Simply use the ‘@’ symbol to tag your colleague/s in any record or note in JobAdder to give them a virtual shout-out. They’ll get an instant email notification containing a link to the note they need to review. More info on this tip.
#3: SMS (300K sent)
Did you know that the average open rate of emails is 22% while that of SMS is 98%? If you haven’t already, now is the time to diversify and optimise your communications with SMS.
We are integrated with SMS provider Burst SMS, which allows users to send and receive SMS from within JobAdder and save frequently-used message templates in order to send SMS in bulk. More info on this tip.

No one wishes they had more time in a day than the multitasking recruiter. Especially when it comes to organising group interviews.
As if hosting interviews isn’t time consuming enough, the task of scheduling group interviews with multiple candidates while working around everyone’s conflicting schedules can really make the task bigger than Ben Hur.
Thankfully, our latest integration with Calendly offers a solution to the problem.
Calendly is a scheduling tool that makes calendar event management simple and straightforward. By syncing up with your connected account, Calendly gathers together all of your existing events and allows you to designate time slots in your calendar when you’re free for interviews.
Once this is done, you can simply invite candidates to book themselves into available time slots for group interview sessions. Recruiters and hiring managers can also export an interview attendance list from within JobAdder, allowing them to be better prepared for the interview itself.
For more information about how to sync up your JobAdder account with Calendly and start scheduling group interviews, read the full Support Centre article here.

Lately we’ve noticed a lot of JobAdder users are getting Slack.
Not as in – you know – lazy, but Slack: the team communication tool that’s used by over 3 million people every day. As our savvy network of recruiters will know, it’s especially great for recruitment teams as the widespread usage of Slack means that it’s quickly becoming a goldmine for talent.
For detailed tips on how to find talent using Slack, this article is a must-read.
So for all our Slack users out there, we’ve put together a cheat sheet of the top 5 tips you need to know in order to work and communicate better, and just be an all-round better Slacker.
Tip #1: How to set reminders
To set a reminder from any message box:
For example, to set a reminder to take a coffee break: /remind me every weekday at 2pm to take a coffee break. To set a reminder for your team meeting in your channel you might type: /remind #[channel] on July 31st at 10:55am to join the monthly meeting.
When you want to follow up on a conversation or remind yourself of a task, you can set a reminder for any message in Slack.
Manage your reminders
Use the /remind list command in any channel or direct message to view upcoming, past, or incomplete reminders. Slackbot will return a list that only you can see.
You can action these reminders directly from your list.
Tip # 2: How to archive and mute channels
Archiving channels that aren’t being used anymore:
Muting channels that you need to be in but find too noisy:
Muting a channel allows you to browse its activity without being notified of unread messages. Muted channels appear at the bottom of your channel list. Keep in mind when you mute a channel, you will no longer receive any notifications from the channel, including @mentions.
Tip # 3: How to prioritise important channels, messages and files by starring them
Tip #4: How to streamline your view by hiding conversations with no unread activity
Tip #5: The top 10 most commonly used shortcuts via the forward slash command
Forward slash commands act as shortcuts to actions in Slack. Here are the top 10 most commonly used commands. To see a full list, simply type ‘/’ in the message text box.

When it comes to the 2017 business objectives that are most important to companies and business leaders, Forbes reports that 87% of employers said that improving retention is a critical priority.
With that in mind, we explore the top staff retention mechanisms that employers and managers can adopt to keep their talent engaged, fulfilled and playing as a team to make valuable contributions to the company.
Reward and incentivise employees
Never underestimate the power of positive reinforcement in daily dealings with staff; it’s a way to make employees feel valued and know that their hard work is acknowledged.
Offering staff incentives to work towards, be they financial or through benefits like earning annual leave, is another way to inspire motivation and employee engagement.
At a recent hackathon, JobAdder gave away a number of Westfield gift vouchers to employees who came up with the most innovative ideas and suggestions to improve the customer experience.
Invest in training
Once employees are at a stage where they feel comfortable with their role, they need to know that their growth will continue and their skills will be built upon and become more advanced.
It’s crucial to invest in training for your employees at all levels, whether that be in the form of formal training and courses, such as managerial courses, or internal mentorship programs.
Did You Know…
According to the CIPD’s recent Employee Outlook Survey of Spring 2017, the form of training that employees said was most useful – with a 94% ranking – was learning from peers through face-to-face interactions or online networks.
Formalise culture-building activities
Workplace culture and fun can’t be a responsibility that sits only on the shoulders of the most social and lively people in the office. Put a framework in place around hosting regular culture-building activities and events, big and small.
Be conscious that not every employee’s idea of a good time is drinking beer, so make sure that there are a variety of inclusive activities that breed the right culture for your company.
Going out for regular Taco Tuesday-themed lunches or monthly movie nights, having different teams cook a company-wide breakfast every fortnight, celebrating staff milestones and successes by creating an internal messaging channel where people can share tidbits about their personal lives, travels, new pets etc.
Lead by example
Embody the values and behaviour you want to see in your employees. Being a decent person and a good leader who deals with all staff and clients equally and handles difficult situations well is inspiring for employees, and is likely to make them stay and follow your lead.
Did You Know…
Recent data by Glassdoor reveals that employees who give their bosses the highest praise in the form of approval ratings were those who felt their bosses displayed great leadership.
Ironically enough, most of these employees were in fact overworked and had poor work-life balance, but it didn’t affect the respect they had for their bosses.
Make work-life balance actually work
Employee work-life balance is a big priority for most companies in 2017. Set out an implementation plan to make it work across the board for all employees and teams. Not all staff can work from home on a regular basis, so introduce flexible hours or monthly days off. Staff will thank you for it and it will boost satisfaction and productivity.
At JobAdder, we offer staff the option to work flexible hours in order to work around going to regular classes, picking up children from school or working when they are most productive. Staff also have the chance to work from home on certain days during the week and to work remotely, a policy that means people don’t have to make a choice between travelling and working.
The competition for talent in today’s job market is tough, but by investing in these top ranking staff retention methods, you’re sure to keep employee satisfaction top priority and maintain the success of your business!
