For most people with ordinary jobs, work is usually the thing dragging them home from a tropical island and back to the desk. But JobAdder is no ordinary workplace. For our Customer Support team, last week it was work dragging them to the tropical island of Bali for an unforgettable week of team bonding and remote working.
At the beginning of the year, JobAdder reintroduced an internal employee program called LifeAdder. LifeAdder is an opportunity for us Adders to set personal goals for the year ahead based on a challenge we want to overcome or a new experience we want to try that puts us out of our comfort zone.
In true Customer Support style, the Support Pirates raised the bar and aimed high – literally – their LifeAdder challenge was to climb the famously steep Mount Batur in Bali together as a team. So last week they jetted off to spend a week in Bali achieving their lofty goal and working remotely for a week from Bali’s busy tech hub in Ubud.
On the day of the climb, the Support Pirates woke up at 2am and trekked for almost 3 hours in the pitch darkness with just a few torches to help them navigate and scale the volcanic rocks. After a few straight hours of trekking and “focusing on breathing so as to not die,” they reached the summit just before dawn and saw the sunrise.
Of the experience, Customer Support Manager Jez shared,
“Mt Batur was a massive highlight, but the biggest highlight for me wasn’t the hike itself but the experience. It was spending more time with everyone out of the office and even out of the normal Sydney work environment. It was also sitting back and not being “the Manager,” learning and getting to know more about everyone and what amazing people they are. This was definitely a humbling experience for me. Reflecting on it, it’s really reminded me to let go of the manager mind frame and know you can place trust in the team around you. They have a different outlook and approach which will help the team grow and evolve and look at things differently.”
The rest of the week was spent working remotely and bonding as a team. Highlights included riding mopeds through the town and never-ending rice fields, trying all the different flavours of local Ubud cuisine and exploring hidden waterfalls.
Customer Support Consultant Holly shared some insight on the importance of team bonding brought about on the trip:
“We definitely did a lot of team bonding just by being around each other 24/7 on this trip. It is a very different experience to be around someone for 8 hours a day, versus the entire day. Working together and then going out to dinner afterwards etc. I think we all really learned so much about each other, and I feel that the time together made us stronger as a team. When you are with someone all day, there is so much time for some ‘real talk’ and this helped me to really get to know the amazing people that I work with.”
Here’s a roundup of the Support team’s top tips for working remotely from Bali:
With the Customer Support team well and truly raising the bar on the LifeAdder challenge for 2017, the question on everyone’s mind is: what exciting adventure do they have in store for next year?

We’re officially past the halfway mark of 2017, which means now is the perfect time to take stock, review and reassess what your plan of action for the rest of year looks like.
There’s probably a countless number things you could be doing differently to better your day-to-day recruiting habits, but realistically, who has the time to completely overhaul their recruitment strategy?
So, here is a mid-year recap of the most frequently-used features, tools and actions in JobAdder over the past 6 months, based on raw data and click rates. We’ve narrowed down the staples of every user’s recruiting processes so that rather than reinvent the wheel – you can make smart improvements to the way you currently recruit.
Your Favourite Features
#1: Job Application Quick View (9.1 million clicks)
Have you started using the Quick View keyboard shortcuts yet? Use the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard to flick through and select Quick View cards in a flash. More about this tip.
Plus, if you just need a snapshot of a candidate record, click on their photo in your search results (as opposed to the candidate name or title) and you’ll see a Quick View popup window.
#2: Quick Search (7.1 million clicks)
Make sure you know how to find whatever record you’re looking for the fastest way possible by using the expanded Quick Search filter options.
As well as traditional search terms, like a candidate’s name, did you know you can search via a mobile number, position and email address? These Quick Search options are also available from the mobile app! More about this tip.
#3: Resume Downloaded feature (2.6 million clicks)
Unsurprisingly, recruiters and hiring managers spend a lot of time downloading resumes.
Have you noticed the new ‘Resume Updated’ column in the Candidates Grid? Always keep an eye on it to ensure you download the most up to date version of a candidate’s resume. In larger terms, this feature also gives you an indication of which candidates are active in the job market. More about this tip.
Your Most Frequent Actions (So Far This Year)
#1: Emails (1.3 million sent)
Do you have more than one office or brand? If so, you need to take advantage of our dynamic email signatures. By setting up just one master email signature – the key information is taken from your user profile – this signature is applied to all of your JobAdder email templates.
Equally, for small businesses, having one clean signature that is consistent across the board adds a professional edge to you and your consultants’ outbound emails.
It’s also completely customisable, meaning staff in different office locations will automatically have a tailored version of the signature, such as local address details and regional social media profiles. More info on this tip.
#2: Notes (1 million created)
Are you using @mentions when your notes involve other colleagues? Simply use the ‘@’ symbol to tag your colleague/s in any record or note in JobAdder to give them a virtual shout-out. They’ll get an instant email notification containing a link to the note they need to review. More info on this tip.
#3: SMS (300K sent)
Did you know that the average open rate of emails is 22% while that of SMS is 98%? If you haven’t already, now is the time to diversify and optimise your communications with SMS.
We are integrated with SMS provider Burst SMS, which allows users to send and receive SMS from within JobAdder and save frequently-used message templates in order to send SMS in bulk. More info on this tip.

No one wishes they had more time in a day than the multitasking recruiter. Especially when it comes to organising group interviews.
As if hosting interviews isn’t time consuming enough, the task of scheduling group interviews with multiple candidates while working around everyone’s conflicting schedules can really make the task bigger than Ben Hur.
Thankfully, our latest integration with Calendly offers a solution to the problem.
Calendly is a scheduling tool that makes calendar event management simple and straightforward. By syncing up with your connected account, Calendly gathers together all of your existing events and allows you to designate time slots in your calendar when you’re free for interviews.
Once this is done, you can simply invite candidates to book themselves into available time slots for group interview sessions. Recruiters and hiring managers can also export an interview attendance list from within JobAdder, allowing them to be better prepared for the interview itself.
For more information about how to sync up your JobAdder account with Calendly and start scheduling group interviews, read the full Support Centre article here.

Lately we’ve noticed a lot of JobAdder users are getting Slack.
Not as in – you know – lazy, but Slack: the team communication tool that’s used by over 3 million people every day. As our savvy network of recruiters will know, it’s especially great for recruitment teams as the widespread usage of Slack means that it’s quickly becoming a goldmine for talent.
For detailed tips on how to find talent using Slack, this article is a must-read.
So for all our Slack users out there, we’ve put together a cheat sheet of the top 5 tips you need to know in order to work and communicate better, and just be an all-round better Slacker.
Tip #1: How to set reminders
To set a reminder from any message box:
For example, to set a reminder to take a coffee break: /remind me every weekday at 2pm to take a coffee break. To set a reminder for your team meeting in your channel you might type: /remind #[channel] on July 31st at 10:55am to join the monthly meeting.
When you want to follow up on a conversation or remind yourself of a task, you can set a reminder for any message in Slack.
Manage your reminders
Use the /remind list command in any channel or direct message to view upcoming, past, or incomplete reminders. Slackbot will return a list that only you can see.
You can action these reminders directly from your list.
Tip # 2: How to archive and mute channels
Archiving channels that aren’t being used anymore:
Muting channels that you need to be in but find too noisy:
Muting a channel allows you to browse its activity without being notified of unread messages. Muted channels appear at the bottom of your channel list. Keep in mind when you mute a channel, you will no longer receive any notifications from the channel, including @mentions.
Tip # 3: How to prioritise important channels, messages and files by starring them
Tip #4: How to streamline your view by hiding conversations with no unread activity
Tip #5: The top 10 most commonly used shortcuts via the forward slash command
Forward slash commands act as shortcuts to actions in Slack. Here are the top 10 most commonly used commands. To see a full list, simply type ‘/’ in the message text box.

When it comes to the 2017 business objectives that are most important to companies and business leaders, Forbes reports that 87% of employers said that improving retention is a critical priority.
With that in mind, we explore the top staff retention mechanisms that employers and managers can adopt to keep their talent engaged, fulfilled and playing as a team to make valuable contributions to the company.
Reward and incentivise employees
Never underestimate the power of positive reinforcement in daily dealings with staff; it’s a way to make employees feel valued and know that their hard work is acknowledged.
Offering staff incentives to work towards, be they financial or through benefits like earning annual leave, is another way to inspire motivation and employee engagement.
At a recent hackathon, JobAdder gave away a number of Westfield gift vouchers to employees who came up with the most innovative ideas and suggestions to improve the customer experience.
Invest in training
Once employees are at a stage where they feel comfortable with their role, they need to know that their growth will continue and their skills will be built upon and become more advanced.
It’s crucial to invest in training for your employees at all levels, whether that be in the form of formal training and courses, such as managerial courses, or internal mentorship programs.
Did You Know…
According to the CIPD’s recent Employee Outlook Survey of Spring 2017, the form of training that employees said was most useful – with a 94% ranking – was learning from peers through face-to-face interactions or online networks.
Formalise culture-building activities
Workplace culture and fun can’t be a responsibility that sits only on the shoulders of the most social and lively people in the office. Put a framework in place around hosting regular culture-building activities and events, big and small.
Be conscious that not every employee’s idea of a good time is drinking beer, so make sure that there are a variety of inclusive activities that breed the right culture for your company.
Going out for regular Taco Tuesday-themed lunches or monthly movie nights, having different teams cook a company-wide breakfast every fortnight, celebrating staff milestones and successes by creating an internal messaging channel where people can share tidbits about their personal lives, travels, new pets etc.
Lead by example
Embody the values and behaviour you want to see in your employees. Being a decent person and a good leader who deals with all staff and clients equally and handles difficult situations well is inspiring for employees, and is likely to make them stay and follow your lead.
Did You Know…
Recent data by Glassdoor reveals that employees who give their bosses the highest praise in the form of approval ratings were those who felt their bosses displayed great leadership.
Ironically enough, most of these employees were in fact overworked and had poor work-life balance, but it didn’t affect the respect they had for their bosses.
Make work-life balance actually work
Employee work-life balance is a big priority for most companies in 2017. Set out an implementation plan to make it work across the board for all employees and teams. Not all staff can work from home on a regular basis, so introduce flexible hours or monthly days off. Staff will thank you for it and it will boost satisfaction and productivity.
At JobAdder, we offer staff the option to work flexible hours in order to work around going to regular classes, picking up children from school or working when they are most productive. Staff also have the chance to work from home on certain days during the week and to work remotely, a policy that means people don’t have to make a choice between travelling and working.
The competition for talent in today’s job market is tough, but by investing in these top ranking staff retention methods, you’re sure to keep employee satisfaction top priority and maintain the success of your business!

No one knows your product better than your customers.
Ok, it’s likely that you and your team know it pretty well too, but it’s impossible for you to have a fresh or brutally honest perspective on the product you invest so much time in every day. And that makes honest customer feedback even more vital.
AskNicely, also known as the world’s most loved Net Promoter Score software, is JobAdder’s latest integration. It’s a customer feedback platform that automatically collects customer insight in real time and helps businesses improve customer experience and also generate referrals from existing customers.
Now, thanks to the integration with JobAdder, you can also use AskNicely to measure job candidate satisfaction, giving you the same real-time measure of your employer brand amongst your potential workforce. Ensure unsuccessful candidates aren’t leaving with a negative view of your company, identify positive candidates who may be an option for different roles or who are likely to refer or recommend friends/colleagues to your company.
AskNicely integrates seamlessly with JobAdder and once it’s up and running, you can select which candidates in your talent pool you’d like to start gathering feedback from and when. Feedback is then automatically collected via AskNicely’s customised surveys.
Once this first-hand feedback is fed into JobAdder, recruiters and hiring managers can analyse and improve their candidate experience, create more targeted messaging for job seekers and better nurture their candidates.
If you’re cynical about surveys here are some statistics that may change your mind – AskNicely users experience an average response rate of 38%, with 1 in 3 experiencing a 50% response rate.
The actionable insights AskNicely allows businesses to tap into from their customers enables them to retain customers, improve satisfaction and grow revenue.

One of the highlights of JobAdder’s event circuit this month was attending the CIPD’s HR Software Show in London.
This much-anticipated event was attended by industry influencers and tech gurus alike, and hosted a series of learning sessions on everything from HR data and analytics to onboarding inefficiencies to AI.
During the event, we also got a first glimpse at the CIPD’s Spring 2017 ‘Employee Outlook’ survey. With a diverse cross-section of over 2,000 UK employees participating in the survey, the new statistics gathered in the survey reveal a lot about the current climate, trends and employee sentiment among the workforce.
Here’s our recap of the most interesting and revelatory survey statistics:
Job satisfaction is on the rise
Health and well-being is a priority in the workplace
Mixed feelings on performance and pay
Optimistic views towards tech

Every recruiter’s main advantage is being able to continually source and secure the best talent.
Last week the 2017 Australian Sourcing Summit event, dedicated to “Pushing Talent Sourcing Frontiers,” was a creative hub of the best and newest sourcing strategies and ideas.
In case you missed out, here are the highlights from the #SOSUAU event:
Why Facebook Is In A League Of Its Own
Shane McCusker from Intelligence Software explored the key reasons why recruiters and hiring managers should be very excited about Facebook as a sourcing tool. For one, it allows you to engage with over a billion people for free.
As a platform with many more users – and active ones – than LinkedIn, Facebook gives sourcers the competitive advantage of being able to tap into talent that others recruiters can’t find.
Once you’ve built a shortlist of promising candidates, the interests listed on each candidate’s Facebook profile can help you evaluate whether they will be the right cultural fit.
Go Where The Talent Is
As well as typical candidate searches, Shane pointed out that Facebook groups, pages and events are a goldmine of talent. For example, if you are looking for a PHP Developer, look at PHP groups on Facebook.
Try New Sourcing Techniques
Troy Hammond from Talent Army emphasised the importance of using unexpected avenues to find talent and the need to try something new every day. These include:
Sourcing Vs Recruitment
Jo James from Xero talked about the importance of differentiating between sourcing and recruitment. Sourcing is about finding the right talent who meet the long-term vision and goals of your company. On the other hand, recruitment is about being tactical and solving immediate staffing problems. To be successful, companies must do both.
More Than Just A Job Title
Jo also pointed out that recruiters need to understand that these days, people are not looking for a job title only, but for a meaningful, long-term career. Candidates are invested in knowing how a new role or company they will work for benefits society and will be able to contribute to their growth and development – personally and professionally.
To finish off the day, JobAdder welcomed all attendees back to the JobAdder office for some well-earned drinks and buzzworthy chat about ideas that came out of the day. Here’s looking forward to the next great sourcing event!

Our integration with e-signature platform HelloSign made waves when it hit JobAdder late last year, revolutionising the way recruiters manage document signing.
As those people who have already ditched the pen, paper and printer method of signing will know, this integration is one that every recruiter stands to benefit greatly from. The amount of time and effort e-signatures save throughout the entire recruitment workflow is massive.
Due to popular demand, we’ve added extensions onto the HelloSign integration within two target areas of JobAdder:
Terms of business can now be sent directly from the Company Record.
Send offer letters, new hire documents and other onboarding documentation right from the Job Order, prior to placing a candidate.
Follow the simple instructions outlined in this video to get set up with HelloSign:
The benefits of having a HelloSign account include:
HelloSign is currently offering a 20% discount off a Business Plan or above exclusively to JobAdder users. Business Plan includes up to 5 team members – anyone sending a document from JobAdder will need to be a team member in their HelloSign account.
This brings the Business Plan to $32/month if paid annually and $40/month if paid monthly for the entire team! Contact HelloSign to purchase an account.

More so than any other job board or social media site, Instagram has a polarising effect on recruiters.
On the topic of Instagram, recruiters fall into one of two categories: they either acknowledge Instagram’s widespread popularity and are open to the talent pools accessible through the platform, or they’re dismissive of it and write it off as a fad – isn’t that the app where people post selfies and pictures of their meals?
If we put aside the group of Instagram users who only post pictures of their smashed avocado toast and selfies, the fact is that there is a large contingent of people who regularly use Instagram for sharing and searching job-related content.
Last week at the UK Recruiter’s annual Recruitment Tech Expo in London, speaker Katrina Collier insightfully raised the point that Instagram currently has over 200 million more users than LinkedIn – the traditional go-to social platform for recruitment. What’s more – as observed by Katrina – unlike LinkedIn, Instagram users are active users who log in and consume content multiple times throughout the day.
So for those recruiters who are open to exploring all talent sourcing avenues, here are the arguments for Instagram as a recruitment tool:
Prospective employees dig around on social media for clues about what it’s really like to work for your company, particularly the millennial cohort, and Instagram is no exception to the places they’ll look. Having an Instagram account is a signifier that your company has it’s finger on the pulse and is in touch with the platforms its employees favour.
An Instagram account that shows pictures of staff birthday celebrations, team activities and fun tidbits from daily office life is extremely attractive for potential employees and passive candidates.
2. It’s a personal, powerful branding tool
Instagram is a purely visual platform and visual content has a much higher engagement rate than simply text. Rather than people having to read a lengthy blurb about the nature of your company, being able to see what it’s like for themselves in pictures is much more effective and impactful. Instagram lets you let people peek inside your company’s world and tell stories through images.
3. Instagram content is highly sharable
As Instagram pictures are accompanied by short captions, the content you publish on your company’s Instagram page can also be published simultaneously to other linked social platforms, such as Twitter and Facebook. Capture different live audiences across all social platforms at one time when you publish Instagram posts.
4. Hashtags on Instagram can be used to build your social presence
Use a company hashtag, for example #JobAdder, in the captions of your Instagram posts to build up a dedicated social portal for all of your company photos. Whenever anyone clicks on that hashtag, they’ll be directed to a page containing every single photo your employees have ever posted using that hashtag, which is essentially your very own branded page. Just make sure that the hashtag isn’t already in use by someone else!
Using other hashtags related to the content of the photo or to your industry, such as #recruitment, is also useful for attracting views and engagement from like-minded people in the industry.
5. Instagram accounts give clues about candidates
Not only is a candidate’s Instagram page a source of information about their personal interests, but often it’s also a source of professional information. It’s common for people to include details about their job title, industry and links to their personal blog or website in the biography section of their Instagram page. Recruiters can use this information to gain further insight about a candidate’s compatibility for a role.
Does your company use Instagram as a recruiting tool or are you still a non-believer?
