Sink or swim. That’s the harsh reality for most Australian startup companies, so what do those that succeed have in common? The right cloud-based tools and technology. Online payments company Stripe, along with a group of venture capitalists and other industry participants, recently probed into exactly which cloud-based tools are most favoured by Australian startup companies. Some 208 startups participated in the research and among the results were an assortment of tools used in the JobAdder office, such as Xero, JIRA, ZenDesk, Slack and Trello. Here is a list of some of the cloud-based tools that rank most popular with Australian startups. At this very moment in time you could increase your disposable income by at least $15,000 a year, while remaining on your current salary. Imagine what you could do with that extra cash! Perhaps you could fly to that holiday destination you’ve always dreamed of. Can you see yourself on a mountain top, or an island beach? I hear what you’re thinking… this sounds like a dodgy sales pitch or get-rich-quick scheme. I understand why you may feel that way, because it sounds too good to be true. Here’s how. Invite flexibility into your life. Remote working is the secret. It’s true, you can work remotely AND increase your disposable income If you don’t already have a job where you can work remotely, I suggest picking up a copy of this book which describes ways you can approach your employer for empowering a remote working scenario. Employers are often more likely to give you greater work flexibility over a cash promotion, but you can turn flexibility into cash… save money on transit to work, claim tax deductions for a home office, no more dry cleaning bills etc. And that’s just the start. If you’re reading this article, you’re quite possibly a JobAdder user. With our cloud-based recruitment software you can already recruit from anywhere in the world and our integrations make anything possible, such as video interviewing, cloud accounting, electronic signatures and more. The golden ticket though, is to forgo your fixed living space. Taking to the road is the ultimate secret to increasing your disposable income. How do you go about hitting the road? Are you renting and don’t want to move your stuff into storage? Why not ask your landlord for permission to sublet your room for a period of time instead? Or if you’re near the end of your lease, you can let go of an address entirely and be free of that financial responsibility. Do you have a mortgage? You can lease your place out for a year, plus you’ll get more income if you rent it out fully furnished! So now that you’ve side-stepped rental payments, and covered your monthly mortgage, you’ll need a roof over your head. The exciting part is that you get to choose where that roof is, because you’re now flushed with cash you would have spent on the mortgage or fixed rent. If you’ve been paying $300 a week in rent and opt out of that cost, then you’ll have an extra $15,600 up your sleeve for the year! To give you an idea, a 4-star, serviced, double room with wifi in Ubud Bali is $250AUD per week, so you’d have $50 bonus cash already to put towards your next flight or a few days at the co-work space… plus you’ll be in paradise. If you desire a place closer to home, you may like to stay in a hostel for the price of $30 a night. Or maybe you want to borrow your folk’s caravan and go on a year road trip, and work using your tethered cell phone for data (for Australia, Telstra has a heat map of signal coverage here). Honestly, the options are as creative as you are.
How did I do it logistically? I stayed in a friend’s van fitted with a rooftop solar panel which charged my laptop overnight and at lunchtime. I tethered my phone for internet, which ran at 12mbps download speed. My rent for that week was nil, and my internet data cost was $5. The bonus for any employer is that I was even more inspired to perform ‘above and beyond’ in my work because of where it was enabling me to be. My office looked like this:

Lee Crompton has been recruiting with JobAdder since he first started out in the recruitment industry 2 years ago, so we were thrilled to hear that he carried JobAdder over to his current role as Senior Business Development Manager at 4Twenty Consulting. We caught up with Lee to find out about his favourite parts of JobAdder – no, not just the famous gummy snakes! – as well as what trends he’s observing in the Australian sales industry at the moment.
1. How did you come across JobAdder? Lee: I used JobAdder with a previous employer as it was their recruitment CRM of choice, so I’ve been with JobAdder from the very beginning of my recruitment career. On day 2 of using it I went down to your HQ for training and away I went. The training was fantastic and you gave out free gummy snakes, what more can you ask for?! I’ve been using JobAdder for 2 years now and have seen a lot of changes over that time… Good changes!
2. What are your go-to JobAdder features, tools or shortcuts? Lee: I would say Quick View is one of my favourite features. You can do a quick scan of any resume before you actually click into the candidate, giving you a quick snapshot. Quick View helps me weave through candidates quicker to find people who are suitable for a role. The Candidate Search function is also great. The fact that you can input keywords listed on the resume and look people up is really helpful and it means you can filter from when people have applied. We can filter by specific dates when candidates applied in the last 3 – 6 months so that we know they’re still semi-active.
3. 4Twenty Consulting specialise in sales talent, what are some of the trends you’re noticing in sales candidates at the moment? Lee: Well obviously, the best sales candidates are the ones who are recruited based on competencies and ability. But another key component that’s massive now – especially within the Australian market which is really competitive – is culture fit.
4. What does your recruitment strategy look like for 2017? Lee: Our strategy this year is to continue to solidify our foothold in the Australian market here and keep operating off a candidate-first ethos. Source: JobAdder Blog – Recruit Everywhere http://blog.jobadder.com/spotlight-on-lee-crompton-of-4twenty-consulting/ The annual day of love is almost here and who better to give some love to than our candidates? In any recruiter’s database, there’s a chance you’ll find a small percentage of candidates who are disheartened or cynical about recruiters because of experiences they’ve had in the past with recruiters dropping off the radar or not calling them back. You don’t need an excuse to reach out to your candidates and give them a little extra attention, but what better excuse to than tomorrow! Here are 5 simple ways you can show your candidates some love tomorrow (or any other day of the year). 1. Pick up the phone Check in with your candidates, give them an update about upcoming roles in the pipeline and ask if they have any new developments to share with you. The lost art of the phone call goes a long way! 2. Grab a coffee If one of your candidates is about to go to a big interview, why not take them for a coffee beforehand? You can bet that even if they don’t get the job, you’ll have earned their respect and trust and they’ll be speaking highly of you to people in their network. 3. Send a text Sometimes trying to find a time to call or meet with candidates – in secret, outside their work hours and commitments – feels like a job in itself. Skip the phone tag and long periods of silence by texting instead, a quick SMS is all it takes to stay in the loop with your contacts. 4. Share Once in a while, take time out to email your candidates some relevant content that will help them succeed in their job search. This could be anything from job interview advice to resume optimisation tips, to an inspiring success story from a fellow job seeker. 5. Invite Keep your candidates clued in to relevant events, workshops and networking opportunities that will benefit them. This might be passing on information about a free workshop that could improve their skill set, or about a networking opportunity at a big industry event.
What are you waiting for? Start spreading the love! Source: JobAdder Blog – Recruit Everywhere http://blog.jobadder.com/show-your-candidates-some-love-this-valentines-day/ I first heard of the term ‘digital nomad’ when I joined JobAdder a bit over a year ago. With clients in over 45 countries around the world, here at JobAdder we have a cohort of digital nomads – or remote working staff – dotted all over the globe at any one time. In fact, our Customer Support team is going to spend a week working remotely from Bali in July. How’s that for a work perk?! So as you can imagine, when I learned about JobAdder’s progressive policy on working remotely, I was dying to see what this digital nomad experience was all about. After spending 3 weeks on holiday in Europe eating my weight in pastries and gelato (the sub-zero temperatures weren’t enough to put me off!) I flew to chilly Liverpool to embark on my nomadic adventure. One of the reasons I wanted to try working remotely was to totally immerse myself in a new city and feel as though I was living like a local, and Liverpool was perfect for that. As my sister lives there, I worked predominantly from her apartment where I was lucky enough to have my very own desk and room with a view. First of all, it’s definitely true what people say about remote working increasing productivity and creativity. Being in a brand new place sitting at a totally different working environment disrupts your norm and it has the effect of shaking up your usual pattern of thinking, definitely for the better. Plus, when you work remotely you’re away from the usual office distractions – getting coffees with co-workers, chatting over the desks, spontaneous games of Ping Pong – so you’re totally in the zone and operating at a higher level of concentration.
The next stop for me was London, where I worked from both an Airbnb and from co-working spaces.
For those fellow digital nomads out there, I highly recommend creating a routine that involves working at co-working spaces on a set number of days each week. It adds structure to your working week and prevents your working environment from becoming stale and lonely. As far as shared working spaces in London go, I recommend the Barbican Centre!
To all those people considering giving remote working a try this year – if you’re lucky enough to find a company that will let you become a digital nomad, I say embrace the chance and see what exciting places it leads you! Source: JobAdder Blog – Recruit Everywhere http://blog.jobadder.com/becoming-a-digital-nomad-in-the-uk/ This year, it’s predicted that video content will represent a whopping 74% of all internet traffic. 74%!! With this in mind, we can’t overstate the importance of embracing video job ads in 2017. Video ads are a way for recruiters and hiring managers to amplify candidate engagement simply by modernising their techniques. Although they may seem like a strange new world for those who haven’t made one before, video ads are actually very easy to make and can be produced with just one person, one camera phone and a few of the right tools. Follow these 5 simple steps to make recording your first video job ad a piece of cake! 1. Prepare The Script The script of your video ad will be based on regular job ad text, but tailored to fit for the digital platform. Start with a short intro of your company, then talk through the job description, and finish off with a succinct summary of the benefits of working for your company. The best video job ads are ones that are personable and engaging – be sure to make the script more conversational and less formal than it would be as a written ad, and don’t forget to include a friendly sign off! 2. Rehearse Rehearsing the ad before you record will save time in the long run. Firstly, ensure it runs for no more than 2 minutes when read out loud, then tweak the script accordingly as needed. Once you’ve nailed the length, practice reading the script a few times so it rolls off the tongue. Finally, pick a spot in the office to record the ad where there’s plenty of natural light and it’s not too noisy. Recording it from a position that shows off a great view of the office will be enticing for job seekers! 3. Record When it comes to recording the ad, VideoMyJob is the tool we recommend. A mobile-friendly app with an inbuilt teleprompter, VideoMyJob allows you to upload your script and record the ad right from your phone or mobile tablet. With VideoMyJob, you can personalise video ads with your company branding and (thanks to a new update) any unfinished recordings are automatically saved. Sign up for a VideoMyJob account and read these short integration instructions to sync up with JobAdder. When recording, prop up your mobile device on a stand or tripod to keep it level. Make sure the camera is at eye level and don’t fret if you stray from the script, often the words come off more naturally when you do! 4. Edit You can apply a company logo to the video that will appear in the top left hand side corner of the video. VideoMyJob also allows you to trim footage so once you’ve recorded a video you’re happy with, crop out any unwanted footage. Towards the end of the video when you sign off and encourage candidates to apply for the vacancy – at around the final 30 second mark – you can insert the application email address and your contact details on the bottom of the video. 5. Publish Once the video is ready, you can view it one last time and add a short blurb to accompany the video. You’ll also have the option to add an application link for job applicants to follow directly to the vacancy. Once that’s done and dusted, hit ‘Share’ on the video from your company profile and watch the applications roll in!

What is this browser ‘cache’ you speak of? The browser cache exists because browser designers believe your computer will be able to display elements of a website faster than your internet connection can redownload them each time you visit. For example, if an image is present on multiple pages of a website, the browser will download a copy onto your computer so it can be accessed much faster next time, this is the cache. Why do my browser’s cache and cookies have to be emptied on a regular basis? As you go about your day, your cache with gradually build up cruft from partially downloaded web pages or strange formatting. Eventually, you’ll notice that your browser, and therefore JobAdder, is running slower than it once was. Clearing your browser cache will give you an instant speed boost. Think of it as a spring clean for your hard working laptop or desktop. So how do I clear this browser cache business then? The process is a little different for each browser so please have a read of the instructions below. The good news is that these steps don’t take long to complete! *Please be extra careful when following these instructions so as not to clear any passwords you may have saved into your browser previously*
Google Chrome (Windows & MacOS)
Firefox (Windows & MacOS)
Internet Explorer (Windows)
Safari (MacOS)
Now that’s done, we can get back to what really matters, arguing if it’s pronounced cash, k shhh or ka shay…* Please let me know if you’ve got any questions! *it’s cash
