As part of my job, I get to travel around the world and do a lot of public speaking at recruitment events, which has allowed me to meet all different kinds of recruiters and talent acquisition leaders. My experience has taught me one important lesson, which is that when it comes to recruitment – mindset is more important than just strategy and tactics!
Our industry can be tough, and sometimes we find ourselves working in an environment that places so much emphasis on short-term strategy and tactics, that we lose sight of having the right, big picture mindset. As recruiters, we need to continuously push the envelope and be focused on long-term business goals and best practice recruiting. If we don’t, we run the risk of becoming complacent or just going along with everyone else’s status quo. For example, when you see a clunky Applicant Tracking System in place for years and the person who’s in charge of Talent Acquisition in that organisation hasn’t upgraded it, doesn’t that say a lot about that person’s mindset? In my experience, recruiters and talent acquisition managers usually fall into one of two camps that are pretty easily identifiable by the below symptoms.

Now, why is continuous learning not more of a priority for most recruiting teams? Have you given much thought to the kind of events and courses your team could attend to make you more blue sky thinkers? Enrolling in a course or conference is an easy way to upskill yourself but before you do, ask yourself the following questions:
Having a positive, proactive mindset is especially important when attending a course/conference so that you can get the maximum value out of it and be open to learning something new that will revitalise those day-to-day strategies and short-term tactics!
