This week, The Global Recruiter reported on an international survey of some 960 CIOs around the globe, and the results made us proud as punch of our Aussie roots. When it came to the subject of women in tech, Australian CIOs had the second most optimistic outlook about evening out the ratio of women to men who hold staff and leadership roles, forecasting that women would one day be on par with men in those roles. Interestingly, the survey also revealed that 53% of Australian CIOs consider challenging existing industry stereotypes to be the biggest challenge for women within the industry. “The survey findings suggest that misconceptions and stereotypes within the industry, rather than concerns about technical competencies and professional capabilities, are the main barriers obstructing progression for women in the IT field.” So if the biggest hurdles for women to overcome aren’t really barriers, just perceived ones, then the path to success is clear to be paved by more kick-ass femme fatales of the tech variety. As the tech industry blossoms in Australia, one of the key imperatives of the government’s National Innovation & Science Agenda is to encourage more women to study Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (or STEM) and to create more opportunities for women in STEM-related fields. The Australian government is investing $13 million to this cause over a 5-year period. Not too shabby. So what kind of career options are out there for women hoping to break into the tech world? Web Development is an area that’s experiencing rapid growth, and employees with the skills required to be such things as a Front-End Developer, Full Stack Developer or UX Designer are in high demand. According to PayScale, the average entry-level salary for a Web Developer in Australia is around $56K. For more insight we turned to one of JobAdder’s talented and experienced Quality Assurance Consultants, Meera, who thrives in her role within the Development team.
“I’ve been in the industry for 8 years now, and I still feel like there’s always something new to learn. I love the fact that I get to build and test in my role, it’s exciting to see the results of what I do right in front of me in the product itself.” Apart from being in a role that allows her to make a direct impact on JobAdder’s core product, her role is one that can be done from anywhere. In Meera’s case, this means getting to divide time between working in the office and working at home with her young bub. So, if we want the stereotypes and “boys club” mentality surrounding the tech industry to erode over time, we need to ditch the notion that boys who grow up playing PlayStation are the ones who are primed for success in the industry. We recently had the pleasure of listening to Natalie Goldman, CEO of FlexCareers, speak on the topics of diversity and unconscious bias at JobAdder HQ. She put it perfectly when she said, “When you see it, you can be it.” Putting a career in tech on the map for women and girls as the appealing vocation that it is and having strong female role models, like Meera, are the ways we’re going to achieve a higher volume of women in the industry and break down those perceived barriers.
Even the iconic trendsetters at Vogue are backers of the women who code movement, celebrating female stars of the Australian tech community with an inaugural #VogueCodes event two weeks ago. And hey, if Vogue are onto it, you know it’s the place to be! Want to know more about a career in tech?

Here, we break down the key facts about Australian Privacy Law that every recruiter – who wants to avoid a $1.7 million fine! – needs to know now.

That’s a lot of paperwork and at JobAdder, we just don’t do paperwork. Thanks to our latest integration with eSignature platform HelloSign, you won’t have to either! Trusted by more than 5 million users worldwide, HelloSign is a smart tool that enables businesses to send, receive and manage legally binding electronic signatures. HelloSign helps individuals and teams complete paperwork online quickly and securely through an intuitive, user-friendly signing experience.
The purpose of this integration is to enable recruiters and hiring managers to be more efficient in those everyday activities involving paperwork and signatures.
Having a smart shortcut around handling (and double handling) paperwork is crucial for people in the recruitment industry who handle large volumes of documents on a daily basis, such as contracts, offer letters and candidate profile forms.
HelloSign helps business get documents turned around faster and better manage documents that require multiple signatures. Recruiters can gather signatures from up to 20 different people on the same document with HelloSign and once complete, a copy of the document is emailed to each person.
JobAdder users can use HelloSign to complete all recruitment documentation efficiently and ensure their candidates and contacts do the same. Documents that require a signature can be sent right from the Placement record in JobAdder and are then securely stored there once signing is complete.
For more information about how to set up this integration, head to our HelloSign integration page.

Sound good to you? It’s simple – once a candidate is placed using JobAdder, recruiters and hiring managers can create and issue onboarding documentation with ease using Onboard Express.
Onboard Express creates personalised online portals for each new employee that are used to issue employment contracts, forms, policy documents and more. The recruiter or hiring manager can also send through welcome packs, customised videos and other general company information to the newbie in order to boost engagement and promote company culture. Like JobAdder, Onboard Express is web-based, making it accessible from any mobile device. After the new starter reviews and completes all necessary onboarding documentation, each relevant internal department (such as IT and Payroll) is notified so that all parties are fully prepared ahead of Day One. As this whole process is conducted online, it bypasses the traditional time lag associated with separate onboarding documents being sent back and forth in the mail.
This integration results in the easy flow of relevant data from JobAdder to Onboard Express. It also ensures that seamless placement of a candidate (thanks to JobAdder) is followed by the smooth onboarding of that person into a workplace (thanks to Onboard Express) making both processes streamlined and simple for all parties. My name is Shahid Wazed and I love my job. As part of my job, I get to travel around the world and do a lot of public speaking at recruitment events, which has allowed me to meet all different kinds of recruiters and talent acquisition leaders. My experience has taught me one important lesson, which is that when it comes to recruitment – mindset is more important than just strategy and tactics!
Our industry can be tough, and sometimes we find ourselves working in an environment that places so much emphasis on short-term strategy and tactics, that we lose sight of having the right, big picture mindset. As recruiters, we need to continuously push the envelope and be focused on long-term business goals and best practice recruiting. If we don’t, we run the risk of becoming complacent or just going along with everyone else’s status quo. For example, when you see a clunky Applicant Tracking System in place for years and the person who’s in charge of Talent Acquisition in that organisation hasn’t upgraded it, doesn’t that say a lot about that person’s mindset? In my experience, recruiters and talent acquisition managers usually fall into one of two camps that are pretty easily identifiable by the below symptoms.
On the other hand, there are those recruiters who:
Now, why is continuous learning not more of a priority for most recruiting teams? Have you given much thought to the kind of events and courses your team could attend to make you more blue sky thinkers? Enrolling in a course or conference is an easy way to upskill yourself but before you do, ask yourself the following questions:
Having a positive, proactive mindset is especially important when attending a course/conference so that you can get the maximum value out of it and be open to learning something new that will revitalise those day-to-day strategies and short-term tactics! I’ll leave you with this quote from myself: “Work on your mindset first before worrying about strategies and/or tactics.” If you loved this article and will be in Canada early next year, I’d love to meet you in person at the 2017 Top Talent Summit in Toronto on May 24 & 25. You also can learn about how to leave a legacy with your remarkable work!

And although blessed with glorious mountains and scenic views to enjoy when he’s not working, Tom Sweeney from Crew Consulting still made time to hang out with one of our remote Adders. Read on to see what he had to say about the recruitment scene in New Zealand.
Tom: Dunedin is quite small and there are a few owner operated recruitment companies here. It’s all very supportive, we know most of the companies and have good relationships with them. We collaborate with a few as we only work IT & Digital roles, so if something comes up in office management or accounting then we would have someone to pass them on to. We work nationally as well, most of the people we come across in the recruitment community are cool and want people to succeed.
Tom: Recruitment wise it’s all very similar, there is a demand for talent and we help people find that talent. Recruitment is simple. However, lots of companies don’t see or know the value in recruitment firms and our job is to educate them. We are not looking to just put a bum on a seat for our customers, if we can’t add value to their process then there is no point working with us. In general it’s not that different, we try to approach things differently to other agencies.
Tom: The technology space in New Zealand is growing and there is a demand for talent of all levels. We need more people doing IT degrees and getting into STEM so the tech space can grow. It was the same in Sydney when I worked there. We work with a lot of international candidates to get them over. We are finding a lot of similar trends to before, it’s more about how you approach recruitment and getting customers to work with you. You have to get inventive with how to attract candidates as well, the standard mediums are not always the best.
Tom: We are looking to create an outcome focussed culture. We are not that worried about hours under the belt and KPI’s hit. We know what we need to achieve and set ourselves achievable goals and smash them. If that means I work Saturdays one month and the other month I do 3 days a week because I have friends visiting then so be it. We work hard and achieve our targets.
Tom: We are really flexible here, it’s the only way to work in our day and age. I am an early riser so am in early and leave early, I work from Central Otago some weeks and was working from Bali as I was there for a friend’s wedding. I don’t see it being flexible, I see it as getting things done and being accountable for what you do. If that means working from home before you go skiing or working late at night because you were on the road during the day. We want people to be working at their best so that might be different times to me and vice versa. If you can manage your diary well and add your notes to JobAdder then it’s all good.
